Liberal actress Rosie O’Donnell took to Twitter to post a series of messages in support of Reality Winner, the anti-Trump NSA contractor who has been accused of leaking confidential material to the media. O’Donnell posted a link to a GoFundMe page to raise money for Winner. It has already surpassed $22,000 of its $50,000 goal. According to the page,
“These funds will be able to assist with loss of wages, counseling from this traumatic experience and to be able to recover from this as Reality & her family rebuilds their lives. Possible expenses for travel for the family and anything they might need to help them through these troubled times.”
O’Donnell referred to Reality Winner as a “brave young patriot” and Tweeted another message stating that she supports Reality Winner, saying, “speak truth to power.” Never mind the fact that this woman has been charged with a very serious crime. As long as the politics fall in line, it turns into a social media circus that holds everyone accountable except the person who has committed wrongdoing. Regardless of the current political climate in the United States, this woman has been accused of a crime. Strip away all of the politics and it’s not hard to see that her actions were illegal and could have detrimental effects on national security.
While the media continues to report salacious headlines, there’s no doubt that those who do not support President Trump will be whipped into a frenzy over anything deemed anti-Trump. Winner’s parents have expressed concern over their daughter possibly being used as an example by the Trump administration.
For one thing, no one set this woman up to take the actions she is accused of. Also, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that in the midst of all the leaks, those caught will be swiftly prosecuted. Reality Winner’s parents are blind to the fact that their daughter is facing charges that she brought on herself.
This is one of the most ludicrous GoFundMe campaigns I have seen. It’s right up there with the woman who started a campaign to recoup funds she squandered on lottery tickets, hoping to strike it rich. The victim mentality and sympathizing with those who have broken the law needs to stop. Just because it falls into a certain agenda does not make it right.
Who is Reality Winner to discern between what will damage national security and the need to know? Surely she had to have been aware of channels she could have utilized as a whistleblower if she felt like an issue needed to be addressed. She didn’t do so because her end game was to incite more hysteria by helping to feed the anti-Trump rhetoric.
She spared no expense in doing so, not even her own livelihood. So forgive me for not joining the resistance and giving her my hard-earned dollars. Pretty sure Rosie O’Donnell could come out of her own pocket to meet the goal she is asking social media users to accomplish.
