The Art of No Deal: Trump Right to Shorten Meeting with Kim

Even as someone with a more liberal bent, I agreed with President Donald Trump’s willingness to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Pouty politics,” by which politicians refuse to even talk with one another, has always struck me as immature. If you have a problem with someone, say it to their face.

I disagreed with how quickly Trump warmed to Kim Jong Un, however. Like President Trump, I hoped North Korea would come to the table as an honest negotiator. However, being a pessimist, I didn’t place much hope in said thoughts.

And now, it appears President Trump has come to a similar conclusion. In Vietnam, Trump cut negotiations short with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Trump wanted North Korea to follow through on its previous commitment to denuclearize.

President Trump thought a deal was at hand but Kim wasn’t willing to concede enough. North Korea apparently agreed to close only the Yongbyon nuclear facility. This would have left the country with a large stockpile of missiles and warheads. Other covert nuclear research facilities would have also continued to operate.

The United States was willing to drop some sanctions in exchange for the closure of the Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Complex. However, Trump wasn’t willing to drop sanctions completely without further concessions.

President Trump said “no deal” and noted that “sometimes you have to walk.” Vietnam was one of those times. However, President Trump claims that he parted on positive terms with Kim. Trump also claims that Kim’s vision is much closer to America’s than it was a year ago.
