The Crosswalk to Stupidity

By: - August 16, 2019

You know how when someone says, “Have you heard what the left [or the euphemism or epithet of your choice] is doing now?” you wince. You don’t know whether to cover your ears or your eyes or the other person’s mouth. You wait for the news snippet as if you’re about to have a tooth pulled—no anesthetic, with a string tied to a doorknob.

I’ve seen this, and I’ve felt like this. In fact, my wife reacted just like this when I told her about this story.

You’ve heard so much leftist stupidity delivered in the ironical names of tolerance, diversity, and inclusion that you truly thought you must have heard it all. This next leftist morsel will make you wonder if there is any dopey social justice petition you could dangle in front of today’s college students that so many of them would not sign.

Well, it seems there’s not. Recently, Ethan Cai of Campusreform.org strolled undercover onto the George Washington University campus with a fake petition to find out if any students (and, maybe, one faculty) would sign it. What issue did the petition address? Glad you asked.

You know those pedestrian crossing signs where it shows the little luminescent (white) man either walking or not walking to signal people to go or don’t go across the street? Well, the petition proposed changing pedestrian crossing signals from an oppressive “white” man to a much more inclusive image of a female (although, I think that presumptuous female in a skirt brings up its own social justice issues, but…one existential crisis at a time, please), or a rainbow colored person, or a person in a wheelchair, or icons of various other colored people icons.

I mean, don’t you find that white man (so white he’s literally luminescent) at least a little bit offensive? In fact, I discovered if you’re wearing glasses while it’s raining, if you look sideways at just the right angle, it looks as if that glowing white man is wearing a white hood…just sayn’. That privileged passel of electrons telling everybody what to do. “Walk!” “Don’t Walk!” Who the hell does he think he is?

This is a fitting demonstration that the left has been successful in its indoctrination of academia. Just read some of the responses Cai got from GWU students who signed the petition (and from one lucid student who didn’t).

One woman was so animated she was downright giddy. “That’s awesome!” she said and signed.

A male student said, “That’s a good idea.”

“This is super cool,” said a female student.

“That’s so cute,” said another woman.

Another young man said, “Kind of simple, just a guy walking across the street. But if it can help other people, why not?” An example of millennial non-confrontation.

An example of me interrupting: Why not? Because it’s stupid. When did it go out of fashion to call stupidity stupid?

With that ready-for-a-tooth-to-be-pulled look of hesitation, one student said, “Oh, Christ… Honestly, I’m ideologically opposed.” He was more diplomatic than I might have been. He could have just said, “I’m not signing that stupid petition!”

    • 'Shut Up and Sing' still applies to emotional celebs
When Laura Ingraham wrote her book "Shut Up and Sing" in 2003, the Left didn't read the book as much as overreact to the title. The title implied something important. While celebrities gain a "platform" they feel compelled to use, do their opinions reflect any expertise? Or is fame more important than logic? Celebrities often… […]

    • The deadly price for Obama's ongoing foreign-policy legacy
If a belligerent state launched 185 explosive drones, 36 cruise missiles and 110 surface-to-surface missiles from three fronts against civilian targets within the United States, would President Joe Biden call it a "win"? Would the president tell us that the best thing we can do now is show "restraint"? What if that same terror state's… […]
