During a phone call Monday, Vladimir Putin thanked President Donald Trump and the CIA for providing critical and timely information to thwart a large-scale terror attack on the iconic Kazan cathedral in St. Petersburg.

According to a White House statement, the planned suicide attack was planned to take place Saturday and “could have killed large numbers of people.”

The BBC reports that the day before the attack, Russia’s FSB detained seven members of a cell of Islamic State supporters and seized a significant stockpile of explosives, weapons and terrorist propaganda.

A statement released by the Kremlin reveals a second site was also targeted.

It is not clear whether these plots were part of the Islamic State’s call for Christmas season attacks.
