Colin Kaepernick was awarded Amnesty International’s highest honor by winning the 2018 Ambassador of Conscience Award. Kaepernick was recognized for protesting against police violence by kneeling during the national anthem before NFL games. In doing so, he created a controversial movement that many in the United States condemned, including President Trump. Kaepernick accepted the award at a ceremony in Amsterdam, saying he was honored to be among those fighting for human rights in the face of “oppressive and excessive police force.” Colin Kaepernick drew unwanted attention to the NFL, causing nationwide boycotts of teams by fans. At the end of the season, he became a free agent and was unable to secure a contract because no teams wanted to sign him. He remains unemployed and has filed a lawsuit accusing the NFL of colluding to keep him out of the league.
