Congressional Democrats introduced legislation that would allocate more than one billion dollars to secure America’s voting systems. The proposal comes amid rising fears that Kremlin-backed hackers will again attempt to interfere in US elections.

The Election Security Act would aid states in purchasing new voting machines that incorporate paper ballots. The feature is widely viewed as the best defense against newfound electronic warfare.

During the 2016 election, about 20 percent of US voters cast ballots in counties that do not use paper ballots.
