Despite the histrionics surrounding President Trump’s emphasis on border security, Mexico’s Interior Ministry immigration data reveals President Trump has sent 26 percent fewer Mexicans back home through November than Barack Obama did in the same span in 2016.
The data first reported by the Milenio newspaper and picked up by Bloomberg reveals about 152,000 Mexican nationals were “repatriated” from the U.S. in the first eleven months of this year compared to Obama’s 205,000.
An ICE report through early October reveals administrative arrests of all immigrants were up 30 percent in fiscal year 2017. According to the report, the lower removal numbers under President Trump were primarily due to about 17 percent fewer illegal immigrants apprehended and “turned back” at the border. These individuals were counted as deportations under President Obama.
ICE credits immigration law enforcement, particularly expedited removal processes, for de-incentivizing illegal entry at our southern border.
