A federal judge has ruled against the Trump administration’s decision to gradually put an end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program–also known as DACA. According to U.S. District Judge John D. Bates, ending DACA was “unlawful and must be set aside.” The program was implemented by former President Barack Obama. The Department of Justice maintains its position that DACA was put in place illegally by circumventing Congress after they refused to pass legislation that would protect children who were brought into the United States illegally. The program has been a source of bipartisan fighting and has garnered protests nationwide by those opposed to the end of DACA without Congress passing a clean bill to protect recipients of the program, also called Dreamers. Judge Bates gave the Department of Homeland Security 90 days to present a better argument on why DACA is unlawful. The Supreme Court has previously declined making a decision on DACA.
