Fiddlers’ Green is the legendary afterlife imagined by Cavalrymen. Its origins are obscure, although some point to the Greek myth of the “Elysian Fields” as a potential inspiration.
The 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment reflects while sharing the U.S. Cavalry’s Poem of Remembrance, Fiddler’s Green, recited by RSS CSM Eric Vidal, 1/11 CSM Michael Williams, 2/11 CSM Roy Holmes and 11th ACR RCSM Michael Stunkard. ALLONS!
Fiddlers’ Green
Halfway down the trail to Hell, In a shady meadow greenAre the Souls of all dead troopers camped, Near a good old-time canteen. And this eternal resting place Is known as Fiddlers’ Green.Marching past, straight through to Hell The Infantry are seen. Accompanied by the Engineers, For none but the shades of Cavalrymen Though some go curving down the trail No trooper ever gets to Hell And so rides back to drink again And so when man and horse go down Or in a roaring charge of fierce melee And the hostiles come to get your scalp, And put your pistol to your head |
