House and Senate DACA ‘Amnesty’ Legislation Presents Starkly Different Options

With pressure intensifying and a government funding deadline as leverage for resolving the DACA impasse, two alternative options are at the forefront.

The Senate “Gang of Six” Durbin-Flake bill would grant “amnesty” to an estimated 3.338 million DREAMers, 14x more than the Goodlatte bill in the House.

It would also allow for the protection of DREAMers’ parents or other relatives, bringing the total to 10.014 million.

In contrast, the House bill by Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) would extend amnesty for the 694,000 current DACA enrollees but with no path to citizenship.

The DACA program created by President Barack Obama was intended to legalize the status of children whose parents or other relatives brought them to America when they were underage.

The “Gang of Six” Durbin-Flake bill would additionally limit wall planning and construction to improvements on “existing” fencing.
