On Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel could act against Iran itself, not only its allies in the Middle East, following border incidents in Syria that brought the foes dangerously close to a direct confrontation.
While holding up a piece of what he claimed was an Iranian drone that flew into Israeli airspace this month, Netanyahu said, “Israel will not allow the regime to put a noose of terror around our neck. We will act if necessary not just against Iran’s proxies but against Iran itself.”
According to a report by Reuters, Iran responded by mocking Netanyahu’s tough words, claiming that Israel’s reputation for ‘invincibility” had disintegrated after one of its jets was shot down while returning from a bombing run in Syria.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, called Netanyahu’s presentation “a cartoonish circus, which does not even deserve a response”.
