GOP Sen. Jeff Flake says bipartisan senators are “at a deal” on immigration legislation to extend DACA. Such an extension could prevent upwards of 800,000 “Dreamers” brought here illegally by parents or other persons from being deported as early as March 5.
Capitol Hill Democrats are trying to use the Jan. 19 government funding deadline to attempt to force through a DACA “fix.” However, President Donald Trump remains insistent upon border security funding and chain and lottery visa migration reform as a pre-condition to signing the legislation.
Also complicating matters for the DACA strategy is Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has so far insisted DACA and government funding remain separate issues.
