According to a report by Business Insider, UK authorities are now convinced that a Soviet-era nerve agent called Novichok, or “newcomer” in Russian, was used in the assassination attempt against a former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.
Reuters reports that Novichoks were developed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War, though Russia’s stockpiles of the chemical was never declared to the international community.
On Monday, British prime minister Theresa May said, “Russia’s record of conducting state-sponsored assassinations, and our assessment that Russia views some defectors as legitimate targets for assassinations, the government has concluded that it is highly likely that Russia was responsible for the act against Sergei and Yulia Skripal.”
