In May 2017, an attack occurred in Manchester, U.K. at an Ariana Grande concert. The suspect detonated an explosive device as concertgoers were exiting the arena after the performance. The bomb was loaded with shrapnel in order to inflict maximum damage on the victims. As parents waited for their children in the foyer, 10 would learn that their children had been killed by the bombing. In all, 22 were killed and 250 were injured in the attack. The youngest victim to be killed was only 8 years old.
The suicide bomber was a 22-year-old British Muslim of Libyan descent. His parents were refugees and claim they were unaware that their son held radical views. Although he was known to police for petty crime, he wasn’t linked with terrorist activity. An imam from the mosque he attended recalled hateful looks he received from the suspect when he spoke out against ISIS and extremism. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack, although there weren’t any connections between the bomber and the terrorist organization.
