In April 2017, a 39-year-old rejected asylum seeker from Uzbekistan hijacked a truck and drove it into a crowd on a busy shopping street. He then crashed into a department store. He fled the scene, but was apprehended later the same day. In total, 5 people were killed and 14 were seriously injured. The attack followed a series of terrorist attacks in Europe carried out by using vehicles as weapons.
The man was arrested and charged with terrorism crimes. It was reported that the man had been rejected asylum, and was given 4 weeks to leave the country. His case was then given to police, along with deportation orders. Police said the suspect had shown sympathy to extremists. Uzbek authorities said the man had allegedy joined ISIS. He admitted to carrying out the terrorist act.
